E.L. Rothschild has a long-standing commitment to leverage its resources and expertise to maximize opportunity and economic benefit for all members of society. In 1967, Sir Evelyn de  Rothschild, Chairman of E.L. Rothschild, established the ERANDA Foundation to champion education, healthcare and social welfare. Today, ERANDA has grown into one of the largest foundations in the UK – receiving more than 1,000 applications a year. The Foundation supports a wide variety of activities – from cutting edge research in economics or Alzheimer’s to the Arts – with up to $8 million a year in grants.

E.L. Rothschild executives, Lynn Forester de Rothschild and Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, are actively and directly involved in numerous for-profit, non-profit and governmental organizations whose mission it is to foster prosperous and equitable communities. They remain dedicated to the effort to make capitalism an engine for broad-based prosperity through its founding and ongoing work with the Coalition for Inclusive Capitalism. (

The Eranda Foundation Overview

Founded in 1967 by Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, The Eranda Foundation is a UK grant-making trust which prioritises support under the headings of medical research, education, the arts and social welfare.

The Foundation distributes £4m to £5m per annum, the majority to charities in the UK, but significant support is also given to charities in the US and other countries, including for example, Africa, Haiti, India and Israel.  When making donations outside the UK, the Trustees support organisations whose work is well known to them.

How we help: A snapshot of Grantees

1. Cambridge University

ERANDA made a £1.85 million contribution to establish the Sir Evelyn de Rothschild Professorship of Finance at Cambridge University. The Professorship aims to support the emerging field of entrepreneurial venture capital and devise new strands of teaching, including a new open programme in finance targeting the Cambridge “Hi-Tech Cluster” of entrepreneurial ventures – a sector that makes up approximately 10% of Europe’s high-tech research and development investment. The contribution supports the appointment of an internationally recognized leader in finance and economics to the Judge Business School with the ability to provide new leadership and fresh vision in this important area. The contribution also allowed the university to establish a specialist Master in Finance program.

Raghavendra Rau is currently the Sir Evelyn de Rothschild Professor of Finance.

2. University of Pennsylvania, World Scholars Program

ERANDA gave a $1 million gift in 2010 to the University of Pennsylvania (Upenn) to support the World Scholars Scholarship Program. The Rothschild World Scholarship provides financial assistance to outstanding students from Commonwealth countries that have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills to attend the University of Pennsylvania. The scholarship places recipients into the UPenn global leadership program, a program that cultivated leaders and provides opportunities for students to meet with prominent business and political leaders.

3. Evelina Children’s Hospital

The Evelina Children’s Hospital is a leading peadiatric hospital in London founded by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in 1869.   Sir Evelyn de Rothschild presided over the Hospital’s Appeal to build a new Hospital, which opened in 2006, and was London’s first new children’s hospital for more than 100 years.  Everything from the menus to the design of the building itself was chosen by children and, with themed floors, a conservatory, rooms with views and pull out beds for parents, sunlight and fresh air, the Evelina Children’s Hospital was designed around the needs of children and their families.
